SGU, just a quick comment

stargate_universe-show-smallSo I started watching Stargate Universe a couple of months ago. I loved the original movie, though I did not really like Stargate Atlantis or or SG1. This one seems different, and I was actually enjoying the first 9 episodes.

I just found out that they will not be showing the other 9 episodes of Season 1 until April 2010.

So just to clarify, they put a 4 month gap in the middle of the season of one of their most popular new shows. I don’t get it.

I must do more

Today a friend from highschool friended me on Facebook. Not a close friend, but we hung out with many of the same people those 10+ years ago.

Even back in HS I was quite a techy, I never considered this guy really into the same stuff. Not that he wasn’t smart, just that he wasn’t all that techy.

So it looks like in the years since HS he has started a few web companies and has done quite well. It is not just that I am jealous, and I am. I just see all that he is doing and how little I am doing and I just want to shoot myself in the face. I do work hard and for a very large and nice corporation…but this guy is being an entrepreneur! Trying new ideas, seeing if they float or sink, exciting stuff.

Sure I help catch criminals and assist in finding murderers and missing people, but I do it for someone else. And when it comes down to it no matter how hard I work I am still their bitch, just another cog in THEIR machine.

I must do more.

Dry Wedding

Posted by: The Derelict  :  Category: Gripes, WTF!?

drunk-brideI am going to a dry wedding today at 2PM. This concept is completely foreign to me. I am glad to be sharing in their special day, but don’t they realize I am a complete asshole when I am sober? and drunk.

Anyway I will let you know how it goes. What will I do until I go?

Look for my fucking flask.

**10:31 Update**

I can’t find my fucking flask.

**4:35Update**

It was a very nice wedding, with a number of awkward sober moments mixed in.

I’m a PC and a Misinformed Shopper

Posted by: The Derelict  :  Category: Computers, Gripes

macpcjpgOK so I use both. I have PC for my servers, Mac for the laptop I am typing this on. At work It is all PC. Either way I like both for different reasons. Anyway I find most of the mac and pc/windows commercials amusing, but what I enjoy the most is watching Microsoft try to point out faults in Mac laptops while touting their own. So here I am watching The Simpsons when this commercial comes on.

screenshot-16

So this lady is trying to find a laptop for $2k that can “cut video”. Fair enough. So around 21 seconds she gets to the Macbook…something I use to edit video daily. She looks right at this sweet new unibody Macbook then at the camera and she says “For under two grand this is the best apple and it only has 2 gigs of RAM.” Then she shrugs.

The shrug indicates that she has no idea that in this day and age RAM is typically one of the least expensive and easiest to upgrade laptop components. In this case you can purchase 4GB of RAM for a Macbook for between $50 and $75. From the looks of it this lady is at Fry’s. I love that place, however if you want to ask a sales rep a question…like how much a RAM upgrade for a Macbook is, well get in line. But wait there was a rep with her…I wonder, why didn’t he speak up about the low price of RAM and the convenience of editing video on a Mac?

So yeah the best Microsoft can do to dissuade people from buying macs is to prey on the people who are too naive to know any better.

And you know at the end when they smile and say “I’m a PC”…They are not excited smiling fools over their new PC laptop, they are ecstatic because they just got a free laptop from Microsoft.

Oh The Simpsons episode that happens to be on tonight is the Mapple episode. haha.

In a “now your shit is outdated and worthless” move reminiscent of something Apple would do, Flip Video has released the Flip Video Mino HD (720p). Like a month after I purchased the Flip Video Mino, which I still love for it’s portability but loathe for it’s inability to focus on any kind of fine detail such as print.

Anyhoo, I got a great deal on an HD camera during the Circuit City fuck up fire sale last week, so I am not necessarily in the market for a 3rd camera in a month. However once this thing drops below $199, I am sure I will be replacing my Mino. Here is hoping they work out that fine detail issue, then it would really be perfect.

It looks like the casing is nearly identical to the original Mino. Now it has 4GB of storage instead of 2GB to accommodate the 1 hour of HD video. As usual, pop out USB for sync and charging.

Not feeling the ‘Boxee’ Love, quite yet.

I decided in my article ‘Apple TV or Western Digital TV or Windows Media Center‘ that I would go with the Apple TV. I went with the ATV because of the recent ability to hack it into playing all formats, and files over the network or external USB. That sounds like exactly what I need, and without the crappy interface of WMC to piss me off!

Well in order to live the dream with my ATV I need to first hack it with Boxee. With the addition of Boxee to my ATV I will be able to use a multitude of online video sites, such as Hulu. That in itself is amazingly cool, and add that to the reasons I mentioned above and I am sold!

Well Boxee is not for sale. It is currently in alpha, and as much as I want to hack the shit out of my ATV to start enjoying my media again, I am stuck on a waiting list for alpha testers. Which after this article on the Giz, I can only imagine is about a bazillion people long.

Anyway, Patience is a good thing, so I will wait. But hopefully Boxee won’t make me wait too long. A nice picture to look at while I am waiting…

A perfect rainbow over the Boxee offices in Tel Aviv, Israel. I have been to Israel a couple times, going again in 2009. I need to get to Tel Aviv this time!

The new Facebook confuses and angers me!

I FEAR CHANGE.

(CNET) Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has caught on to the fact that a sizeable handful of his 100-million-plus users say they aren’t too thrilled with the site’s new redesign. But he won’t change anything, as Facebook occasionally has in the face of user revolt.

A post on the company blog, authored by Zuckerberg, wrote that the site’s new focus–which emphasizes the sharing of media and information — is “an important step for us.”

How big of you!

Just twelve and half decades tardy, the church of England has conveyed their official “my bad” to Charles Darwin. The guilt-ridden church will be posting a letter to the 126 years dead Darwin on their website tomorrow. Hopefully he has an internet connection in heaven or hell depending on how you feel about evolution. Here is an excerpt from the dear john letter:

“Charles Darwin, 200 years from your birth (in 1809), the Church of England owes you an apology for misunderstanding you and, by getting our first reaction wrong, encouraging others to misunderstand you still,” the article says, according to extracts printed by The Mail on Sunday newspaper.

“But the struggle for your reputation is not over yet, and the problem is not just your religious opponents but those who falsely claim you in support of their own interests.”

You know that kinda sounds like the C of E is saying, it’s not you Charlie, it’s me. I have been seeing a therapist about my intolerance, I thought I was over this by now. I am so ashamed! First it was Galileo with his sun-centric astronomy! And now you with your monkey’s and natural selection…I guess I am not ready for a rebel like you, but I will love you forever.

Anyway, bravo C of E, bravo! You are quite gracious magnanimous.
